On the day that Joseph Pulitzer died his great newspaper the New Tork World printed notable edl torial say the Omaha World Herald It bore the headline "Reaping the Whirlwind" and in part it read as follows: There are those who think that th substantial business structure of the country is breaking down under th trust assaults of the federal depart ment of justice That is wrong What is giving away is a false superstruc ture built up in years of political iniquity which sought to roof io the whole power of government for selfish Individual use The main structure trembles under the shock but no more The financial debauch which beset this country from the election of 1896 has had no parallel in modern times That election was a victory for sound money as the people understand it It was the execution of a bill of the sale to high finance as Mr Hanna and his followers understood and gave notice How this private property in gov ernment was capitalized vidual pockets is written large in late history The tariff 'was first given another uplift and then with the Spanish war out of the way the sup pression of the competition to get the full private benefit of the tariff swept through the country like a whirlwind Trusts and trusts ot trusts rose in scores: millionaires were made in a day the shadow of the billionaire ap peared: and captains of high finance sought a ratification of special bar gains in the White House itself They built up Zion with blood and Jerusalem with Iniquity They sowed the wind Has anybody supposed the whirlwind was to be avoided? It had to come it Is here and the sooner the inevitable reaping is over the better That is a courageous utterance coming as it does from a newspaper published in the shadow of Wall street and from a newspaper too that used all Its powerful Influence in be half of the party which In the cam paign of 1896 executed the of the sale to high The entire country paid the bitter cost then It has been paying it through all the years that have in tervened And it is still the innocent along with the guilty 1 or fifteen years under that bill of sale high tariff extortion has been practiced trust extortion has been 1 practiced monopoly has been buiided and buttressed until now the condi tion has become such that it is no 1 longer endurable The process of de molishing what has been built is be ginning and main structure is trembling under the How different might be the condi tion had the history of the last fifteen years been written otherwise! these not always as In the Zt case of Maryland to have been so clearly defined as to be intelligible to I the outsider The most marked ex ceptlon to this rul was in Massachu etts where Governor oss has been i re elected purely as it appears on a tariff reform issue and in th face of "an opposition which stopped at noth ifig that would win votes The result there is peculiar in that while the governor's plurality has been reduced from 4ooo to 7000 the vote he re celvedthls year was sotna 6000 more than was cast for him a year ago in dicating that while the sentiment for tariff reform is stronger this year than ever it was sufficient interest was taken bythe beneficiaries of the tariff to get out the republican stay at home vote The outcome can only bo regarded as distinctly unfavorable to the administration of President Taft In New York the democrats have themselves to thank for their defeat The issues therb were local and the result plainly shows an impatience of Tammany methods and Tammany con trol The democratic legislature sim ply did not make good and the people of New York saw no reason to hope for better results if they were given another chance While possibly the elections in New Jersey and Ohio may not eventually prove to have much bearing on the chances of the two leading rival cah didates for the presidency they are of interest nevertheless While New Jersey has not altogether rejected Governor Woodrow Wilson it seems plain that his friends have lost ground On the other hand in Ohio democracy seems to be militant and Governor Harmon to have inspired his followers with renewed faith At all events the democratic victories cities dicate cratic state Kentucky it is gratifying to note has got over a temporary aberration and swung back into its rightful place as a democratic state Possibly this may be due in part to the inspiring character of its candidates The party which puts up men like James Mc Creary and Ollie James has a right to expect to be indorsed While this gain is offset by Ne braska going back again to the re publicans a sidelight is thrown on the character of the victory for governor by the fact that in closely disputed congressional contests the democratic candidates have been successful In Kansas the seat occupied by Repre sentative Mitchell deceased a re publican has been won by a democrat A democrat also takes Congressman Latta's place in Nebraska On the whole while it can scarcely be said that there is anything decisive in the election returns so far as they effect national politics there is noth ing to indicate that the democrats are losing ground anywhere or that of the people to reverse the verdict by which at the last congressional election the Taft administration and the republican policies were over whelmingly rejected New Coats BY EXPRESS AND THEY ARE BEAUTIES THEY ARE MADE TH RIGHT UP TO STYLE THE BEST VALUES YOU WILL 8EE IN Mi8SOULk The corporations may be able cripple Governor power
