and and and Missoulian, Friday, December 5, 2003 B3 MONTANA Missing forgery suspects buy gun in Stevensville A couple accused in a string of recent check forgeries is now suspected of using a forged check to buy a gun, Missoula County Sheriff's Capt. Greg Hintz said Thursday. John and Denise Abbott have already been charged in District Court with multiple counts of check forgery. And both are also wanted for failing to appear in court on those charges. A $15,000 warrant has been issued for John Abbott and a $20,000 warrant is out for Denise.

Hintz said the couple allegedly bought the gun from a Stevensville man last Friday morning. When he tried to cash the check, the bank wouldn't honor it. Court documents filed in Denise Abbott's case charge her with five counts of forgery, using several different sets of checks stolen from the trash. Parade, lighting of tree to be held Saturday Downtown Missoula revs up its holiday spirit Saturday with the Parade of Lights, capped by the lighting of the Christmas tree at 6:30 p.m. at Circle Square.

Also, the Art Museum of Missoula will offer free entry and cider. The Missoula Children's Museum will provide a children's winter craft workshop from 2 to 5:30 p.m. The lighting of the bonfire When the affidavit was filed Nov. 6, the Abbotts had allegedly forged 169 checks, totalling $9,960.93. All of the account holders said they threw their checks away before moving out of town.

In one case the checks had been torn in three but were taped back together and used. In an interview with police, the affidavit said, Denise Abbott told an officer she had quit her job and her husband's business had failed. She said they found the checks when they were looking through Dumpsters for furniture and other things they could sell at garage sales. According to the affidavit, John Abbott told the same story. Both were initially released on their own recognizance.

The warrants were issued when they didn't show up for court dates.
