SERVICES MISSOULA PUBLIC LIBRARY, Storytime, half-hour program designed for 3-6 year olds and feature state Attorney General Mike Greeley for an eight-year term as Supreme Court justice. Trieweiler was elected unopposed to a second eight-year term on the bench last falL He said he'll make his final decision about running for chief justice when he knows for sure what Turnage plans for next year. Turnage's eight-year term on the bench expires in 2000. "I don't think we need to ask the voters of the state twice to make the same decision," said Trieweiler, who lost to Turnage by 1,034 votes statewide in 1992.

Turnage, a longtime state legislator before moving to the court in 1984, could not be reached for comment Thursday about his plans for 2000. Although he is rumored to be retiring when his term expires, he told the Associated Press recently he's yet to decide for certain. Trieweiler said he is unsure who his opponents may be for the chief justice position. He said the amount of money he'll have to raise will depend largely upon the competition. KATHLEEN MCLAUGHLIN Missoulian State Bureau HELENA Terry Trieweiler, the state Supreme Court judge who narrowly lost a bitter battle in 1992 against Jean Turnage for the court's top spot, will seek the chief justice position again next year, as long as Turnage doesn't run.

"I think I could perform the responsibilities well and I'd like to do it," Trieweiler said of the chief justice job. Trieweiler, a former Whitefish trial lawyer, has filed papers with the state Commissioner of Political Practices to begin raising money for his chief justice bid in 2000. As yet, he has reported no cash in his campaign fund, but the first reporting deadline for contributions doesn't come until the first week of March. Seven years ago, voters chose Turnage to remain leader of the state's highest court. Trieweiler, a sitting court justice at the time, challenged Turnage in a hard-fought, acrimonious contest.

In 1990, Trieweiler beat former BLM keeps wildlife-rich Devil's Kitchen land GREAT FALLS The Bureau of Land Management has decided to keep about 17,000 acres known as Devil's Kitchen, noted for its array of elk, mule deer, wild turkeys, black bear and trout. Richard Hopkins in the bureau's Great Falls office briefed the Lewistown Resource Advisory Council on the decision Wednesday. Area landowners had proposed that the agency consider trades or sales to clear up the checkerboard of private and public parcels that has complicated management of the area. Hunters, however, worried that land exchanges could further reduce public access to the area 25 miles south of Great Falls.
