Preview The theme for the four-day gathering is "With Emphasis on Ensemble" and will showcase statewide musicians. Guest clinician is George Pap-pastavrou, Juilliard trained pianist, teacher and expert on contemporary American music, from the University of Syracuse. He will be giving sessions on Chopin, Bach and contemporary American music throughout the convention. He will also share his experiences of music and musicians in China, where he presented master classes lege.

The piece, "Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano," was commissioned by the association. It will be performed by the Trio Sine Nomine, a Montana State University trio. Members are Johan Jonsson, violinist; Linda Young, cellist; and Leslie Jones, pianist. The public is invited to attend. Tuesday's events include: The Member Recital at 1 p.m., which will include ensembles of teacher members from around the state.

Composer David Evan Thomas will present a Meet the Composer Workshop at 2:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall in the Music Building. Dennis Alexander, faculty member at UM, will give a ses- sion at 3:30 p.m. on "The Emerging Young Pianist." Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. the Cromley-Wolverton Piano Duo, guest artists from Billings, will appear in concert in UM's Music Recital Hall.

The program will include CP.E. Bach, Martinu, Schumann and John Corigliano's Kaleidoscope. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Pianist Arthur Kostuk has a program of all-Polish music he wants heard, and so he went to the unusual step of renting the University of Montana Theater himself for his Wednesday-night concert.

Kostuk, a Texas-born pianist who has played concerts in Southern California and Seattle, says he wanted to play in Missoula "because I believe this is the cultural center of Montana."
