BitterrootView. Saturday, Feb. 6, 1992 BV-3 BITTERROOT VIEW 'Dinosaur of fish' surfaces at Trout Unlimited meeting tLVN georgianna i WLOR 1 MOLIY HACKETT Can I grow the super-sweet corn varieties here? TL Also on this month's program is a demonstration of tying spring midge and midge pupa patterns by guide and fishing fanatic Dave Jones, who has found these flies to be effective in February and March. As the valley continues to be urbanized, the Bitterroot Chapter of T.U. is starting a volunteer water-monitoring program.

The group would welcome help from anyone interested in water quality. Volunteers may call Jack Mauer at 777-5311 or Kent Meyer at 363-2405. Georgianna Taylor Bitterroot View HAMILTON The pallid sturgeon, Montana's only endangered fish, will be the program subject for the February meeting of Bitterroot Trout Unlimited on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge in Hamilton. Pat Clancy, fisheries biologist for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, will discuss the biology of the species called "the dinosaur of fish." Clancy will show slides of the large fish, which inhabits eastern Montana rivers.

He'll discuss the sturgeon's status, the unusual way it's caught and its prospects for survival. There is a difference between what does well on the west side of the Bitterroot Valley and what thrives on the east side. Molly, who lives on the west side, is a real fan of Earlivee II, which produced for her 7- to 8-inch ears with 14 rows and had excellent flavor. She did not think much of plain old Earlivee. Georgianna, on the east side, got a great crop of delicious corn from Earlivee.

The difference is that the east side gets longer, sunnier afternoons. As your corn plants mature, remember that each strand of silk is attached to a kernel and for a kernel to mature, that strand of silk must receive a grain of pollen. Molly likes to take an active role in the sex lives of her corn plants, walking down the rows each day they are pollinating and giving them a gentle whack to make sure each silk is dusted with pollen. Corn is wind-pollinated and such activity is especially helpful on the windward ends of the rows. sugar is slower to turn to starch, making the corn taste good up to three days after picking.

You need not isolate these varieties. Standard (SU) varieties are the earliest to mature and some are naturally sweeter than others. They retain peak eating qualities on the stalk for about three days, but not after picking. You must have one that the catalog or packet states will germinate well in cool soil. Look for the shortest number of days to maturity, plus ear size and row count.

Some will offer 4-inch ears with eight to 10 rows and are not worth the garden space they require. Remember that "days to maturity" refers to ideal conditions. With the possible exceptions of radishes, peas and lettuce, nothing gets ideal conditions in the Bitterroot. The days to maturity stated in the catalog or on the seed packet merely offer a guideline, but we can't recommend planting a crop that claims more than 70 days to harvest. i iic answer is A probably no.

For one thine, the "davs to for a week or 10 days after picking, making them ideal for trucking off to market. Many people feel they do not have as much good corn flavor. Super-sweet varieties are tricky to germinate and aren't meant for the cold soil we have to offer at corn-planting time. The plants are the least hardy. Super-sweets must be planted well away from other varieties to prevent cross-pollination, which produces tough corn with practically all starch and no sugar.

Sugar-enhanced (SE) varieties represent a cross of standard corns with South American plants. Their kernels contain about 15 percent more sugar than the standards and their maturity" for the super-sweets (SH2 varieties) are too long for our area. For another, super-sweets were never intended for growth by home gardeners. Their sugar content is twice that of standard varieties and is slow to convert to starch, making the corn ideal for commercial growth and shipping. It was not meant to be eaten straight from the stalk.

The mature ears will remain edible If you sold property or had a change in your job or marital status in 1992, you may benefit from professional tax assistance this year. Diane Ellis, E.A.
