'Space Broom7 Might Be Answer to Radiation Belt The Missoulian, Friday, February 8, 19633 Sentinel Kiwanians See River Movie By FRANK CAREY SAN ANTONIO, Tex. (AP)-A space scientist said Thursday the artificial radiation belt produced by last summer's high altitude H-bomb tests and deemed hazardous to space flights might be completely swept away by a huge "space broom" launched from the earth. Still another idea for at least partial dissipation of the belt, he related, would be to temporarily disturb the earth's magnetic field by generating a giant electric current between two electrodes placed in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Dr. Alan Rosen declared a rocket-launched gigantic metallic sheet measuring more than a half mile on all four sides conceivably could sweep away the belt in about a year's time.

It would be designed to clear an area extending virtually around the earth, except over the poles, at heights of from about 100 to 3,000 miles. He said such a concept is not presently within tho capabilities of space technology but, he added, it is possible that a practical technique might be developed. Vicarious thrills came to Sentinel Kiwanians Thursday in Hotel Florence. Responsible was a movie, "Nine Against the River," showing jet boats being buffeted by rapids as they took an adventure-packed trip up the tumultu-ous Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.
